From Málaga to Your Kitchen: How Our Avocado Oil Is Made and Tested

|Kalpesh

Quick answer: Our avocado oil comes from Hass avocados grown in the Málaga region of Spain. The fruit is pressed mechanically, with no chemical solvents. Every batch is tested in Málaga, tested again at an independent NABL-accredited laboratory in Chennai, checked once more before filling, and packed into light-proof tins with a batch code you can look up.

Why we went all the way to Spain

When we decided to bring avocado oil to India, the first question wasn't price. It was: where can we get oil we can stand behind, batch after batch?

India grows avocados, and we're growing some ourselves near Nashik. But Hass avocados are grown mainly outside India today, and to our knowledge, naturally refining avocado oil isn't yet established here. Spain's Málaga region has a long history of growing Hass avocados in a Mediterranean climate that suits them, and producers there who press oil to international (Codex) standards. We're rooting for India's avocado story to grow. Until then, we'd rather be transparent about where our oil comes from.

We chose a family-run agricultural producer with Mediterranean roots. Single origin matters to us: one region, one variety, one supply chain we can trace. Blends of mixed origins are where quality questions start.

What convinced me about our producer

It wasn't a brochure. It was how they communicated.

From the very first conversation, they were ready to share every process, every document and every certification we asked for. They were honest about what was achievable and what wasn't, which, in my experience, is rarer than it should be. When an email wasn't enough, we got on a video call. They send us samples for every batch, whether it's small or large. Their oil meets Codex standards. And, simply put, they're a joy to work with.

For an engineer, that's the supplier you hope for: one who treats openness as normal, not as a favour.

From fruit to oil, step by step

  1. Harvest at maturity. Hass avocados are picked once they reach full maturity; each lot is inspected so only sound fruit moves on.
  2. De-stone, peel, grind. The flesh becomes a smooth paste.
  3. Separate mechanically. The paste is spun in centrifuges that separate oil from water and solids. No hexane or other solvent.
  4. Two paths:
    • Drizzle (extra virgin) is cold-pressed under 27°C and left unrefined.
    • Essential is naturally refined: filtration and horizontal centrifuging, a hot-water wash and vertical centrifuging, steam and vacuum deodorisation, then controlled cooling and final filtration.
  5. Stored cool. Oil rests in temperature-controlled tanks before shipping to India.

Avocados yield only 12–20% oil, so it takes 11 to 15 avocados to fill one 450 ml tin. When people ask why avocado oil costs more than sunflower oil, that number, plus import duty, is most of the answer.

Four checks before a tin reaches your shelf

Check Where What it confirms
1. Production test Lab in Málaga, Spain Quality before the oil is stored and shipped
2. Independent lab test NABL-accredited lab, Chennai Purity, freshness and safety against Codex and FSSAI standards
3. Regulatory inspection Indian authorities, at import Compliance for avocado oil
4. Pre-filling check Our co-packer Stability before it goes into tins

Only batches that pass all four get filled. Each one gets a unique code printed on the tin.

Why tin, specifically

Light and oxygen are what age an oil before its time, and Indian kitchens are bright and warm. Tins and aluminium spray cans block light and air completely, and our controlled-pour cap limits how much air gets in each time you use it. We didn't just assume the tin was safe; we had SGS India test it for migration into the oil. Read the results.

The part you can check yourself

Turn your tin around and find the batch code. Enter it on Know Your Batch and you'll see the laboratory results for that exact oil: freshness markers, fatty-acid profile and safety checks, explained in plain language. Testing is only half of transparency. Showing it is the other half.

Frequently asked questions

Where are the avocados grown?

In the Málaga region of southern Spain. They're Hass avocados.

Is the oil blended with other oils?

No. It's avocado oil only, from one origin, and the fatty-acid profile in each batch report reflects that.

Where is it filled?

In India, at a quality-controlled co-packer, after the Indian lab test.

Why not Indian avocados?

Not yet at the scale and consistency we need. We're growing Hass trees near Nashik and learning as we go.
